How-to guide
Promote replies and ideas into posts
Follow the complete Slack workflow to promote replies and ideas into posts, including prerequisites, decisions, and recovery steps.
Goal
Turn saved ideas and inbox replies into ideas or draft posts without losing their source context. Promote moves useful material from triage into the creation workflow so your team can develop it, review it, and schedule it.
When to use this
Promote when a saved idea is ready for a full post, or when an inbox reply or captured message should become an idea or draft instead of staying in triage.
Use this workflow when the source matters to the resulting content. The promoted item keeps the originating idea or conversation attached, which gives editors and reviewers the context they need without reopening the original Slack message.
Before you begin
- You have access to the Create work center.
- Select an active brand. Promote flows need a valid idea or conversation context.
- For reply promote, start from inbox triage, message capture, or the Save to Slash Social create-post shortcut path so Slash Social can resolve the conversation.
- Confirm which brand should own the new item before you open the promote modal. Changing brands after promotion can separate the item from the source context your team expects.
Steps
Promote an idea to a post
- Open the idea from the ideas list or library.
- Choose Promote to post (or the promote action on the idea row).
- Slash Social confirms the request in Slack while the promote modal opens.
- Complete required fields in the promote modal and submit.
The idea becomes a draft or queued post depending on the fields you set. Generation may run if the format requires it.
Promote a reply to a post
- From inbox triage or message capture, choose Promote reply to post. You can also start from the message capture shortcut chooser after you save a message to Slash Social.
- In the promote modal, pick whether the outcome is a new idea or a draft post.
- Fill required conversation and brand fields.
- Submit.
Which outcome to pick
- Choose new idea when the reply is inspiration but copy is not ready.
- Choose draft post when you want to edit and schedule immediately in Create.
Slash Social branches the follow-up: ideas land in your ideas list; drafts open in Create with conversation context attached.
Choose the right outcome
Choose the destination based on how much work remains:
- Choose new idea when the source is useful but still needs an angle, audience, format, or supporting evidence.
- Choose draft post when the source already contains enough direction for someone to edit the copy, attach media, and prepare it for review.
If you are unsure, create an idea. Ideas remain available for later development and avoid placing unfinished material into an active draft queue. Creating a draft is more useful when a teammate is ready to continue immediately.
Before submitting, check the active brand and read the source preview in the modal. For a conversation, confirm the participant and message match the reply you selected. For a saved idea, confirm the title or source link identifies the intended idea. Close the modal without submitting if either value is wrong, then reopen Promote from the correct source.
Verify a promote action
- Open Create or Ideas for the active brand.
- Confirm the new item shows the expected status (saved draft, queued job, or pending approval after submit).
- Open the item and confirm the source reply or idea link is still present.
Failures show a Slack message without discarding the original idea or conversation. Read the message, fix missing fields, and submit again.
Continue the promoted item
After promotion, open the resulting item rather than promoting the source again:
- For a new idea, open Ideas and add the angle, audience, evidence, or campaign context the creator needs.
- For a draft, open Create and review the copy, platforms, media, and ownership.
- Complete any required generation or media preparation.
- Send the item through your normal review and approval workflow.
Promoting the same source a second time creates another item. Do that only when you intentionally need a separate angle or draft. If you are checking whether the first request succeeded, refresh App Home and search the active brand before submitting again.
Success criteria
- Promoted ideas or replies appear in Create or Ideas with the expected status.
- Brand and conversation fields match the source you promoted.
- No duplicate items unless you intentionally promoted twice.
After promote, the new item may appear as draft saved, queued, pending approval, or generation failed if media or generation does not complete. If generation fails, reopen the item from Create or the Failed Jobs view and retry.
Troubleshooting
Promote modal does not open
Confirm you selected an active brand before promoting. Idea promote needs a valid idea id; reply promote needs conversation context from inbox or message capture. Reselect the message and try Promote reply to post again.
Required fields block submit
The promote modal must match the active brand and conversation. Fill every required select and text field. Error text appears on the modal without losing your prior input.
Promoted item missing from Create
Refresh App Home or reopen Ideas. Confirm you are viewing the same brand you chose in the modal. If you selected new idea, the result appears in Ideas rather than the draft list.
The wrong brand or source appears
Close the modal without submitting. Switch to the intended brand, return to the original idea or conversation, and open Promote again. Do not submit and then move the item as a workaround because the saved source context may still point to the wrong brand.
A duplicate item appears
Open both items and keep the one with the correct source, brand, and content. Remove the unintended duplicate only if your role permits deletion and no teammate has already started editing it. Wait for the first submission to finish before retrying a future promotion.
Generation fails after promotion
The promotion succeeded if the resulting draft exists, even when a later generation step fails. Open the item from Create or the Failed Jobs view, correct the reported media or generation problem, and retry that job instead of promoting the source again.
You need another entry point
Type /social and use Command Palette to open Create, inbox, or ideas. See Slash commands reference.
